Familiar Bedfellows | New Work by Matthew Groves & Sarah Nishiura
Inspired by private, intimate interior spaces and made specifically for the Lillstreet Gallery, Familiar Bedfellows is an exhibition of ceramics by Matthew Groves and quilts by Sarah Nishiura, which explores connections between two artists who have lived and worked side by side for the past 17 years. Although Groves' work is typically figurative and narrative, and Nishiura's abstract and geometric, both artists draw on their love of the history of their respective crafts, employing traditional techniques to create contemporary objects which reference and celebrate the functions long associated with their chosen media. Nishiura's quilts, made to offer warmth and beauty to a home, will hang as backdrops to Groves' large inverted vessels, which can serve as curfews to keep smoldering coals alive through the night, or bells which can be rung to wake a person in the morning.
