Teaching the Traditionexplores Mingei pottery (the Mingei aesthetic is best described as the beauty of an object arising from its utility and functionality). MacKenzie brought this school of thought to Minnesota, eventually creating his style of “Mingei-sota.” MacKenzie taught Johnston and his students with the same zeal, moving the Mingei Movement to midwestern America.
The MacKenzie/Johnston lineage and the Mingei Movement of functional potters is dramatically represented in this historic show. Along with the works of MacKenzie & Johnston are some of the functional potters they have taught and encouraged over many, many years. Their works are to be looked at, held, and used in one’s daily life as they truly represent a heritage which must be revered as “functional masterpieces.”
