My work investigates the plight of the female condition through the body. The performance of gender is challenged materially by constructing delicate and curvy forms from industrial steel wire and strong muscle-like veins of knotted stockings, lace, and lingerie. Subversions of accepted notions of gender are articulated through these beautified welded steel structures that are rendered useless without the knotted, stitched and sewn stockings and lace that hold the work together. The immediacy of presenting the work on the body in the format of jewelry allows me to provide a direct connection to the bulbous, imperfect, politicized body the work explores.
